THE NOTEBOOK (2004)
Directed by Nick Cassavetes.
The Notebook is a supposedly heart warming tale of true love designed to reinforce out dated and naive cliches such as the idea of true love transcending class and culture boundaries, in which a rich city girl and poor country lad fall in love one magical summer and are torn apart by their social incompatibility. However, The Notebook falls at the first hurdle when the social gap between the lovers is so insignificant they couldn't fit either one of their grand country mansions in it. A brief spell in the military sounds like a great opportunity to up the ante in this perplexing love story, however we are not treated with the power and respect for war as seen in Forest Gump or Legends of the Fall. Instead we have a clumsy and ultimately pointless couple of scenes, in which a fairly insignificant character is lazily killed off presumably to build on Noah as a figure of strength. The Notebook fails to make us sympathize with either character's situation, especially when the focus of discrimination awareness is aimed at the slightly less rich when the slightly more rich don't bat an eyelid at the lack of racial equality going on all around them. We are left with the conclusion that the couple are simply fickle and selfish. This type of film is tough to get right simply because it's a shit type of film, but no extra credit should be awarded to Cassavetes as The Notebook is brutally mundane and laughably tactless, it fumbles over cliches and fails to grasp at anything at all original and even uses dying elderly people as a last, cheap, vain attempt to siphon some emotion from the viewer. When actually, the scene raised more concerns about the state of health care these people were receiving in what seems to be a very expensive nursing home, as the night nurse abandons the ward for an entire night. All in all The Notebook fails in every count, not even a steamy sex scene present.
